Most Reliable V6 Engines: Toyota GR, Honda J35, Nissan VQ

Most Reliable V6 Engines: Toyota GR, Honda J35, Nissan VQ

The most reliable V6 engines come from Toyota, Honda and Nissan. All three brands built six-cylinders that can last a long time. Still, each family has weak spots. You should know them before you buy a used engine or a used vehicle.

How we judged reliability

We looked at four things. First, known weak points. Second, maintenance needs, like a timing belt. Third, how easy parts are to find. Fourth, what compression tests tend to show on these engines.

We didn't use forum votes. We also didn't treat awards as proof of durability. Our Ultimate Guide to JDM Engines explains why low mileage imports can be a good deal. Our post on how JDM engines are compression tested shows how we check them.

Toyota GR V6 (1GR-FE and 2GR-FE): reliability summary

Toyota's GR family tops our list. The 2GR-FE is a 3.5L V6 used in the Camry, Highlander and Sienna. The 1GR-FE is a 4.0L V6 used in the Tacoma and 4Runner. Both use timing chains, so you skip a belt job.

Neither engine is perfect. The 2GR-FE has a rubber VVT-i oil line that can develop a pinhole leak. Water pump leaks and oil seepage also show up in owner reports. These repairs are usually small next to a failed engine.

Parts are easy to find, too. That helps if you plan to keep the vehicle for years.

Honda J35: reliability summary, and the VCM caveat

The J35 is a smooth 3.5L V6. You'll find it in the Accord, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline. Many of these engines run well past 150,000 miles with good care. It uses a timing belt, so ask for proof of the last change.

VCM is the catch. It's Honda's cylinder shutoff system. Some VCM engines burned oil and fouled spark plugs. Honda later extended its warranty on several 2008 to 2013 models for misfires tied to fouled plugs, as shown in Honda's dealer bulletin on NHTSA's site.

That doesn't make every J35 a bad buy. Versions without VCM avoid the problem. Check the exact engine code before you order.

Our J35 engine guide covers each version. Meanwhile, you can shop Honda engines for sale.

Nissan VQ: reliability summary

The VQ has a strong track record for smoothness. Ward's gave it 14 straight 10 Best Engines awards, from 1995 to 2008. Keep in mind that Ward's judges design and performance. It doesn't measure long term durability.

The family includes the VQ35DE, VQ35HR and VQ37VHR. All three use timing chains. Some owners report oil use and chain wear on high mileage units. Service history matters here.

Other Japanese V6s worth knowing

A few more engines deserve a mention.

  • Toyota 1MZ-FE and 3MZ-FE: older 3.0L and 3.3L V6 engines. Both use timing belts. Some owners report sludge on neglected 1MZ-FE units, so ask for oil change records.

  • Honda J30 and J32: earlier J-series engines. They also use belts.

  • Infiniti VR30DDTT: a newer twin turbo 3.0L V6. It's quick, but it has fewer years of data. We'd treat it as a wait and see engine.

Which used JDM V6 is the safest buy for your vehicle?

Pick the engine that matches your vehicle first. Then compare the risks.

  • Toyota 2GR-FE: Camry, Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, RAV4, Lexus RX350 (roughly 2005 to 2017, by model).

  • Toyota 1GR-FE: Tacoma (2005 to 2015), 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, early Tundra.

  • Honda J35: Accord V6, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline (roughly 2003 to 2017).

  • Nissan VQ: 350Z, 370Z, G35, G37, Altima V6, Maxima.

Many buyers get the best result by sticking with the engine their vehicle already uses. If your budget is tight, compare it against a rebuild. Our post on JDM engine vs rebuilt engine explains the tradeoffs.

What to check before buying any used V6

  • Match the engine code to your vehicle and year.

  • Ask for the compression test numbers. Our guide to reading a compression test report shows what good numbers look like.

  • Ask how the seller backs up the mileage. See how to verify a JDM engine's mileage.

  • Look at the engine photos for leaks, cracks and damaged wiring.

  • Ask about belt or chain service, and whether the water pump was replaced.

  • Check the warranty length on that listing.

FAQ

Which V6 engine is the most reliable?

Toyota's 2GR-FE and 1GR-FE are our top picks. Nissan's VQ and Honda's J35 follow. Condition and service history still matter more than the badge.

Is the Toyota 3.5 V6 more reliable than the Honda 3.5 V6?

Usually, yes. The 2GR-FE has fewer known design problems than VCM equipped J35 engines. A J35 without VCM can still be a solid choice.

Are Nissan VQ engines reliable?

Generally, yes. They're smooth and widely used. Check for oil use and chain noise on higher mileage units.

Do Japanese V6 engines use timing belts or chains?

It depends on the engine. The 2GR-FE, 1GR-FE and VQ engines use chains. The J35 and 1MZ-FE use belts.

What's the most reliable engine ever made?

No one can name a single winner without real failure data. Several Toyota, Honda and Nissan designs have long records, but results vary with care.
