Japan Motor Import SINCE 1998

Warranty policy

Last updated and effective: October 13, 2026

This policy describes the limited warranty on the parts we sell. It is in addition to your legal warranty and does not replace it. Returns, refunds and cancellations are covered in our Return & Refund Policy and Cancellation Policy.

1. Warranty terms by part type

The limited warranty term starts on the day you receive the item. If your product listing shows a longer term than the table below, the listing applies to that item.

Part typeLimited warranty term
Used replacement engines90 days
Used performance engines (VTEC and turbo engines)30 days
Used replacement transmissions60 days
New engines, including KDM engines6 months
Rotary engines (Mazda RX-7 13BT, 13BTT and 20B)No limited warranty
Electrical and electronic partsNo limited warranty
Used performance transmissionsNo limited warranty

A performance engine is an engine with VTEC or with a turbocharger. If you are unsure which term applies to the part you are buying, ask us before you order. The term for your item is also shown on its product listing.

2. Your legal warranty

Nothing in this policy limits your rights under the law. In Quebec, the Consumer Protection Act gives consumers a legal warranty that cannot be excluded: goods must be fit for the purposes for which they are ordinarily used and durable in normal use for a reasonable length of time, having regard to their price, the terms of the contract and the conditions of their use. This applies to used goods too, taking their age, mileage and price into account. Consumers in other provinces keep the protections of their own provincial consumer laws.

If you believe a part has a hidden defect, contact us with your order number and a description of the problem, even if the limited warranty term has ended.

3. What is covered

Every used engine we sell is warranted to be in serviceable condition, having regard to the nature of used engines, for the term in section 1. The limited warranty covers:

  • All internal engine parts, including pistons, piston rings, piston pins, crankshaft and main bearings, connecting rods and rod bearings, camshaft and camshaft bearings, timing chain and timing gears, intake and exhaust valves, valve springs, seals, guides, oil pump, push rods, rocker arms and shafts.
  • The engine block, cylinder walls and cylinder head, which are warranted to be free of cracks or distortion.
  • For transmissions that have a warranty term, the internal mechanical parts of the transmission assembly.
  • For new engines, defects in materials and workmanship, under the same conditions that apply to used engines.

On used engines, head gaskets are warranted for 30 days only, regardless of the term in section 1.

If a covered part fails, we will agree the most appropriate remedy with you: a repair with rebuilt or serviceable used parts, an exchange for a correct or equivalent part, or a refund. See our Return & Refund Policy.

4. What is not covered

The limited warranty does not cover external parts attached to engines, for example intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetors, distributor, starter, emission control devices, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, water pump, thermostat, belts, hoses, oil pan, valve cover, sensors, electronic parts (wires, computers, injectors and similar), drive shafts, engine mounts and half shafts. It also does not cover:

  • The cost of labour required to remove and install a repaired or exchanged engine in the vehicle.
  • Damage caused by abuse, neglect, accident or natural perils.
  • Loss caused by the engine being improperly installed.
  • Towing charges, and freight or delivery charges other than the return shipping we refund under section 6.
  • Loss caused by overheating, including oil leaks, a blown head gasket or any other engine damage due to overheating caused by poor water circulation, a clogged radiator, a stuck thermostat or a faulty water pump.
  • Decrease in performance of any covered part due to normal wear and tear (unless an actual breakdown occurs), having regard to inherent manufacturing faults in some engine models.
  • Loss caused by any modification or use of the engine for which it was not originally designed, for example adding a turbo, supercharger, nitrous system or aftermarket tuned ECU.
  • An engine that is used for competitive driving or racing.
  • Loss caused by the failure of a part or parts of the engine that are not covered by this limited warranty.
  • Tune-ups and adjustments, filters, hoses, belts, lubricants, coolants, emission control devices, spark plugs and tune-up parts.
  • Deterioration or pre-ignition damage.
  • Repairs performed without prior authorization from Japan Motor Import.
  • Loss caused by a defective timing belt. A brand new timing belt should be installed.

5. Maintenance requirements

To keep the limited warranty in force:

  • The engine must be installed, maintained or adjusted by a certified mechanic.
  • Set ignition timing to the specification recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Change the oil after 5,000 km.
  • Re-torque the cylinder head bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
  • Check the cooling system and service it if it is rusted or contaminated with oil, and replace the coolant.
  • Replace the timing belt, oil filter, water pump and spark plugs.

6. How to make a warranty claim

  1. Contact us within the warranty term. Call 514-369-3330 or email japanmotorimport@gmail.com with your order number, photos of the problem and, if you have one, a mechanic's report.
  2. Do not repair first. Repairs performed without our prior authorization are not covered.
  3. Return the part if we ask. You pay the freight to return a defective engine, and no replacement is sent until our staff have inspected and verified the returned engine.
  4. If the engine is defective, we refund your return shipping charges and ship a replacement, repair it or agree another remedy with you.
  5. If the engine is not defective, you pay all shipping charges, including shipping the engine back to you.
  • The engine must be returned in the same condition it was sent. Missing parts will be charged to you.
  • If we send a replacement before receiving the original, the original must reach us within 60 days, or you will be charged the full price of the engine plus freight.

7. Limitation of duration

Repairs or exchanges do not extend the limited warranty beyond the term described in section 1.

8. Returns, refunds and cancellations

This page covers defects. The Return & Refund Policy explains when a return, exchange or refund may be approved and how long you have to report a problem, and the Cancellation Policy explains cancellations, deposits and reservation fees.

9. Condition of used engines

Used engines have typically been in use for 32,000 to 97,000 km, depending on the year of manufacture, and are not brand new. There may be small scratches on the engine because it is used. There may also be fragile plastic, metal or rubber parts that could bend or break during shipping. These parts can be replaced with parts from your original engine or bought from a local used auto parts store.

10. Emissions and long-block pricing

Engines complete with accessories may not comply with the emission control laws of the province, territory or country in which they are used. Provincial and federal authorities may require you to transfer the emission control devices from your old engine to the engine you are installing. The add-on parts on an engine sold by Japan Motor Import are left attached for testing and for your convenience, and are free of charge. Unless the listing states otherwise, the purchase price covers the long block only (cylinder head and short block).

11. Liability

To the extent the law allows, Japan Motor Import is not responsible for incidental or consequential damages arising from loss of use, loss of time, inconvenience or commercial loss. This limit does not apply where the law prohibits it, and it does not limit your legal warranty or any other right you have as a consumer.
